Is Just Using PayPal for Credit Cards Professional?

Posted by Alice Seba

Q: Is it professional for a small business owner to accept only PayPal, money orders and checks?

A: I don’t know if it’s a question of professional or not professional, but more of a case of possibly losing sales. PayPal is not available to all countries and many people prefer to simply use a credit card and not sign up for a PayPal account. However, as I understand it, if you set it up, your customers can pay with PayPal without having to set up an account.

And yes, PayPal is definitely a good option to offer your customers. You may find that if you didn’t offer PayPal as an option, you could lose sales since they have such a huge number of users and many people use their PayPal balances to make purchases.

Still, I think that having a separate merchant account and offering an additional way to process the credit cards is the way to go. There are plenty of 3rd party services like Authorize.net or 2Checkout.com that you could use.

Ultimately, I think making it easy for your customers to pay you is ultra important. You’re offering more than a lot of online business owners are by accepting money order and checks. I would simply offer another credit processing option to what you’re already offering.
