How Do I Create a Successful Online MLM/Direct Sales Business?

Q: “With so many people involved in MLMs and other direct sales companies, how do I turn that type of business model into a profitable online business?”

A: The nice thing about direct sales companies is that the groundwork is laid out for you, the products are already there and you have a team (upline) willing to help you at all times. With all those things already in place, you’re one step ahead when it comes to starting your business on the net. You can have even greater success by moving your direct sales business online, but you must remember at all times that in order to make it online with a full-ledged business, you need a UNIQUE perspective.

Look at it this way, when you market your direct sales business offline, you are generally working person-to-person and serving your local area. It is relatively easy to distinguish yourself and build a relationship with your customers. When you’re online where geographical boundaries are dropped and there are many other competing for the same attention as you, you NEED to be different.

Here are Some Tips for Bringing Your MLM/ Direct Sales Business Online.

Research, find and focus on a target market. Just because you sell vitamins, doesn’t mean that you have to target everyone who buys vitamins. Leave that mass marketing to people like drugstore.com. It’s expensive and you don’t need to compete with the big boys. Hone in a specific target market (ex. healthy families, cyclists, etc) and you can capture a captive audience that loves what you offer.

With an online business never forget content is king. Find or create information that your target market wants and needs and provide them with it and lots of it. It’s an inexpensive way to generate traffic, faithful readers and satisfied customers.

Just like offline, you need to create your OWN list of leads. Create your own mailing list and deliver the content and product promotions they are looking for.

Hot Tip! When you target in on a specific market AND have your own mailing list, that opens you up to selling other products to that list … and not just what the direct sales company has to offer. If you can sell related products that your target market already needs and buys, you’ll do well. You can sell products through affiliate programs, create your own information products, sell wholesale or whatever you’d like. Just make sure the company you’re working with allows you to sell other products to your own list you created. If they don’t, consider working with another company that doesn’t set limits on you.

The important thing to remember is you may work for an MLM company, but this is YOUR business. That will protect you if you if you decide to move on from the company or if they, as many MLMs do, go out of business. If you’ve created something uniquely yours, you’ll have a solid foundation to continue to build on.
