Why is a Target Market So Important to Online Business Print E-mail
Written by Alice Seba
Q: Why is a Target Market So Important to Online Business?

A: In short, learning all you can about your target customer may mean the difference between a successful business and a business that never makes it off the ground. By not taking the time to get to know your target customer, you’re ultimately shooting yourself in the foot.

In order to really get to know your market and what makes them tick, you MUST do your research. Skipping or not being thorough with this crucial step is one of the main reasons many businesses fail. You can have a killer product or service, an awesome website to promote them, etc., but if you don’t know your market and how to get them to buy, your chances of success are almost slim to none.

Most business owners know that their target market is the key to their business growth and success, however they don’t know the best way to go about learning more about that market and so they leave their research “unfinished” or worse yet, never do the research at all.

In order to get your customers to react the way you want them to, some of the things you have to learn to do include:

- Offer products/services they want and need.

- Offer those products/services at the optimum price.

- Learn to put together sales copy that makes them excited and anxious to buy.

If you’re wondering just what you need to do in order to really get to the heart (and wallet) of your customers, check out Kelly McCausey & Lynette Chandler's 5 page report: Sometimes It IS What You Know That Matters (PDF)

In the report you’ll discover the 3 most important steps to getting into the minds of your target market including:

Step 1: Identifying Your Target Market

Believe it or not, many people don’t know who their ideal target customer is or they leave their choices too general. For instance, if you want to market to moms, you have to go deeper than that. Moms come in many different varieties and what appeals to some doesn’t to others. You have to break it down further.

Step 2: Asking the Right Questions to Find Out More

Many people know what to ask in order to find out more about their market, but when they don’t get the answers they expected they can’t figure out why. You’ll find out that the WAY you ask the question plays just as big a part as asking the question itself.

Step 3: Know Exactly Who You Should Be Asking Your Questions

I’ll give you a hint: You shouldn’t be asking friends and family. They love you too much to be honest with you.

I read this article and I really like the spot about not only asking the right questions, but asking them the right way. Very important. Some good links to. Another freebie is www.polldaddy.com

I think I understand the need for asking questions before narrowing down a target market. This, and the 5-page report, were really helpful.
