Which Is Better – Promoting Other People’s Products or Creating Your Own? Print E-mail
Written by Alice Seba

Q: I've been kicking the tires on affiliate marketing for a short while, mostly running Adsense or using Amazon links, nothing that would break that bank at all. I'm ready to take the next step into something bigger, but I'm at a crossroads. I can either be a straight affiliate marketer, or I could create my own ebook to market (I have an idea for one, but I'll keep that one to myself). So long story short, I'm wondering what has been more lucrative for your, promoting other products or your own. Maybe more specific, if you were starting today, which direction would you go?

Thanks,

Dave Conrey - DaveConrey.com

A: Great question! Affiliate marketing is a very lucrative business move, no matter which side of the coin you are on and I commend you for not only realizing this, but for trying to determine which direction is the best to start.

As an affiliate marketer and product owner with affiliate programs, I recommend both directions. However for someone just starting out, I often recommend becoming an affiliate first. This would help you to get to know your market even better. You can see which products sell well and what topics and products your market is interested – and even not interested in.

Once you know what they want, creating your own products to sell is so much easier. Having your own customer list (those I can stay in touch with, give special offers to and turn into repeat customers) is priceless. In addition, you can recruit affiliates to build your mailings and customer lists. Nothing is sweeter!

Also, if you’re creating information products, you are creating a perfect opportunity to sell more affiliate products inside your own products. It’s a win-win situation.

I've seen a lot about affiliate marketing, and think it's great advice to learn the marketing aspect from both sides. Great advice, Alice.
